RAYA IN THE CITY

Obviously not as lively as Raya in the kampung, but as long as you have your family with you, nothing else matters.

As usual, Raya is eating day.

But priorities first; ketupat and duit raya.

Anyways, how was your Raya everyone?!

Mine was pretty routine. Every year, I try to wake up early and I dream to sweep around the house and wave out to my neighbours, like how they do in Raya ads and movies. But I never seem to be able to due to the over-excitedness and binge-eating the night before. And I can't wave to my neighbours because they have high fences.

So as usual, rushed like mad to get ready. It's all a big blur and I suddenly find myself showered, dressed, made up and in Raya clothes. I had no say in my baju raya this year. My mom sent material to the tailor when I was in Sarawak, and apparently told her I was skinny. The tailor used the measurement from 2 years ago and I could not breathe in my baju raya. I could barely eat without worrying about my clothes ripping at the seams. It was so tight, I felt like I could be The Incredible Hulk if I ate a little bit more and painted myself green.

No doubt, after a month of fasting and drooling, we get a whole month of befriending fatty food. Some lose weight during Ramadhan, so eating those ketupat, lemang and Raya cookies just balances the weight back to normal. For me, unfortunately, this is not the case. I just gain double the weight, during Ramadhan and again during Syawal. Don’t blame me or my metabolism! I’m pointing my fingers to the amount of chickens I had for sungkei in Sarawak (because that's all they have!)

Since I can’t enjoy my ketupats anymore, for reason solely based on the unaccessability of them in Sarawak (not because I’m scared of putting on more weight pscchtt!), I thought I’d be the Grinch who takes away Raya from you. Some interesting facts you should know:
  • ketupats make you sleepy
  • lemang can clog your arteries
  • curry makes you sweat and stinks up your breath
  • one raya cookie is 100 calories - 1 hour on treadmill
  • one serving of ketupat and rendang – 1,000,000 hours on the treadmill
Enjoy what’s left of Syawal. See you at the gym.
